Education System

New Zealand education system is highly regarded around the world and it is known to be one of the best education systems. Every student who wishes to study in New Zealand should have basic information regarding the education system of the country. New Zealand is equipped with 8 state-funded universities which offer degree-level education. All these eight universities were ranked in the top 100 universities in the 2015/16 QS World University Rankings in at least one subject. Along with these universities, New Zealand owns 16 Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) and almost 550 Private Training Establishments (PTEs). ITPs and PTEs are allowed to provide vocational degree-level education. PTEs provide particular vocational courses at certificate or diploma level.

If you choose to study in New Zealand you will be experiencing flexibility, choice and great support. The educational qualifications are well-designed in a series of levels which goes from Level 1 to 10. According to your eligibility and preference, you may earn a certificate, diploma or a degree from New Zealand.

While you study in New Zealand you can be assured of the quality of education as New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) ensures the excellence is provided by non-university and tertiary training providers. NZQA is also responsible for the New Zealand Register of Quality Assured Qualifications and the National Qualifications Framework. Tertiary education Ages 18+

New Zealand has eight state-funded universities, 16 Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) and about 550 Private Training Establishments (PTEs), which include English language schools.

Choose the type of institution that’s best for your career path:

• Universities offer higher degree-level education. Programmes are research-led and generally academic rather than vocational. In the 2015/16 QS World University Rankings, all eight of New Zealand’s universities were in the top 100 in at least one subject.
• ITPs and a few larger PTEs offer vocational degree-level education.
• PTEs tend to offer specific vocational programmes, mainly at certificate and diploma level.

Secondary school, Ages 13-18 (Years 9-13)

New Zealand has three types of school:

• state schools, where 85% of Kiwi children go
• state-integrated schools, which may be run by a religious faith or use specialist teaching methods
• private schools.

Students at secondary schools – also known as high schools or colleges – work towards the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). Secondary schools also offer some vocational subjects, such as tourism and computing.

Some schools also offer Cambridge International Examinations and International Baccalaureate programmes.

Intermediate school, Ages 11-12 (Years 7-8)

Intermediate schools are a bridge between primary school and secondary school.

Primary education starts at Year 1 and continues through to Year 8. Years 7 and 8 are offered either at a primary school or at a separate intermediate school.

Primary school, Ages 5-10 (Years 1-6)

Primary school students study subjects guided by New Zealand National Curriculum: English, the arts, health and physical education, languages, mathematics and statistics, science, social sciences and technology.

Students’ abilities in reading, writing and maths are regularly assessed against expectations for their age level, as set out by New Zealand’s National Standards.

Early childhood, Ages 0-5

Early childhood education provides education and care for children before they are old enough to go to school.

New Zealand has more than 4000 licensed early childhood education services available, including kindergartens, childcare centres, play centres, home-based care and playgroups.

Education system’s quality and standards

New Zealand government agencies monitor the quality of all areas of the education system.

This ensures students gain the skills they need and obtain qualifications that are relevant and good value for money. 

Agencies responsible for quality assurance include:

• The Ministry of Education, which develops education goals and curriculum for primary and secondary schools
• the Education Review Office, which checks the quality of education and student support in primary and secondary schools
• the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, which ensures the qualifications offered by secondary schools and non-university tertiary institutions are regarded in New Zealand and around the world as credible and robust
• Universities New Zealand, which ensures all eight New Zealand universities provide quality qualifications and education
• the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand, which is responsible for maintaining professional standards for primary and secondary school teachers.

Courses

Tertiary education here is delivered by a wide range of providers including Universities, Institutes of Technology, Polytechnics, Private Training Establishments and Industry Training Organisations.

Education providers offer qualifications at every level – certificates, diplomas, graduate and post-graduate degrees. They are all ranked on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework. Universities, Institutes of Technology/Polytechnics, and Wānanga

New Zealand has eight universities that offer academic programmes, rather than vocational.

All New Zealand’s universities offer a broad range of subjects for undergraduate, Masters and Doctoral (PhD) degrees in commerce, science and the humanities. Some universities offer degrees in specialist fields – such as medicine, agriculture, engineering, etc. A number of universities have more than one campus, often located in different cities, and some have overseas programmes.

New Zealand also has 18 Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs). They provide professional and vocational education and training ranging from introductory studies through to full degree programmes. Many ITPs also offer English language training and postgraduate study options, including up to Doctoral (PhD) level. Courses are more vocationally oriented, emphasising practical experience and application to work situations. A degree from one of these institutions has equal status with a university degree.

There are three Wānanga in Aotearoa New Zealand. These tertiary institutions offer teaching and learning environments that are based on Māori values and principles. Many offer qualifications in te reo Māori (Māori language), teaching, nursing, business, health, English language and Māori arts. Wānanga offer many undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including master’s and doctoral (PhD) level qualifications.
